A pre-roll is not always plain flower in paper
Oregon's cannabis regulator, the OLCC, draws the line this way in its product categorization guide. It defines a pre-roll as cannabis rolled in paper that may contain a filter or crutch, then splits it in two:
- Plain pre-roll: bud, shake and trim only, wrapped in unflavored paper.
- Infused pre-roll: bud or shake combined with one or more of extract, concentrate or hemp.
The OLCC's own compliance examples make the line concrete. A pre-roll with extract is what it calls a twax joint, and a pre-roll combined with kief is a kiefed joint. A pre-roll that includes both kief and oil is also infused.
Before you choose a pre-roll, sort out which of those two kinds you are looking at. A strain name alone does not tell you whether anything was added to the flower.
Read the live menu before you pick a pre-roll
The product list on this page shows live items from the menu of the store you have selected, with a switch to the other store. That lets you see whether a pre-roll you want is in Derby, in Hartford or in both.
We prioritize products from licensed Connecticut cultivators and processors, pre-rolls included.
How pre-roll weights add up in Connecticut
Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection used pre-rolls as its own example when it explained how purchases add up, in its news release on the adult-use transaction limit. Those rules cover adults 21 and older buying at licensed stores like ours.
DCP says any combination up to 14 total grams equals 1/2 ounce. Its two pre-roll examples:
| Pre-rolls | Total weight | DCP equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 14 pre-rolls of 1 gram each | 14 grams | 1/2 ounce |
| 28 pre-rolls of 0.5 grams each | 14 grams | 1/2 ounce |
From that same 14-gram figure, 7 grams is 1/4 ounce and 3.5 grams is 1/8 ounce. Our guide to eighths, quarters and half ounces walks through the same weights for flower, and the legal limits are laid out on our page about Connecticut cannabis possession limits.
Where infused pre-rolls fit on the shelf
Infused pre-rolls have their own aisle on our site, so you can shop them on their own.
For the longer explanation of how the two kinds differ, read our comparison of infused and regular pre-rolls. If you are still not sure which one you are looking at, call us at 860-420-BUDS (2837) and ask before you order.
Questions shoppers ask about pre-rolls
Can I order pre-rolls ahead?

How do I pay for pre-rolls?
We take cash and debit cards at both stores, and credit cards cannot be used. The Derby store has an on-site ATM.
Where do I find current pre-roll offers?
