Reading a Connecticut cannabis label, one panel at a time

The THC percentage alone does not tell you what is in a Connecticut cannabis package. Start with the two DCP symbols that mark THC and the under-21 warning, each at least one-half inch square. An edible is capped at 5 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per multiple-serving package. Potency sits under caps of 35% for flower and 70% for other products, and concentrates above 30% total THC carry a psychosis-risk warning.

Shop the Derby menu Directions to Derby

The two symbols every Connecticut label must carry

The state label rule calls for a DCP-issued symbol showing the package contains THC and a second symbol showing the product is not safe or legal for anyone under 21.

Neither one may be covered, and each has to measure at least one-half inch on every side. That makes them the first thing to check. If a price sticker or a folded flap hides one, the package is not showing what the rule says it must.

What the potency caps mean for the number you see

Since October 1, 2026, the ceiling DCP lists for adult-use flower is 35%. For other adult-use products, with edibles, pre-rolls and topicals among them, DCP lists 70%, per its potency thresholds page.

A cap is a legal ceiling, not a grade. A flower number near the top of the range tells you about potency and nothing else.

Edibles: the serving rule and the package total are different numbers

DCP's cannabis safety guidance sets the serving rule: an edible is limited to 5 milligrams of THC per serving. A separate rule covers the box, which can hold no more than 100 milligrams of THC in total when it holds more than one serving.

At 5 mg a serving, a full 100 mg package works out to twenty servings.

On our edibles aisle, the product list shows live items from the menu of the store you have selected, so you can order ahead for pickup there.

The high-potency warning on concentrates

A concentrate above 30% total THC has to carry this exact wording: This is a high-potency cannabis product and may increase the risk of psychosis. The source is the same state label rule that sets the two symbols. The 30% trigger is a separate number from the 35% and 70% caps. Treat the warning as its own line on the label, not as a sign that a product is over a legal limit.

Packaging rules you can check before you open anything

Before a seal is broken, the package should meet three DCP requirements: it is child-safe, it is tamper-resistant and it is light-resistant. Tamper resistance is the one you can see for yourself. If a seal looks opened, point it out at the counter before you pay.

DCP also says edible packaging cannot appeal to anyone under 21.

Terpene and THC values on the live menu

The label tells you about the package in your hand. Before you order, the live menu is where to compare. Flower listings on our Derby and Hartford live menus show a THC value, and nearly all of them show terpene values.

On our flower aisle, the product list below the article shows live items from the menu of the store you have selected, with a switch to the other store. If the terpene names are new to you, our guide to cannabis terpenes covers the ones you will see listed.

Questions shoppers ask about reading a label

Can an edible be shaped like an animal?

No. DCP allows edible cannabis products only in cuboid or spherical forms, and animal shapes are prohibited.

How does an edible count toward the possession limit?

It counts by milligrams of THC. For adults 21 and older, chapter 420b of the General Statutes treats one ounce of cannabis plant material as equal to five grams of concentrate or other cannabis products with up to five hundred milligrams of THC. If you think in flower sizes instead, our guide to eighths, quarters and half ounces explains the common weights.
